We are tackling the evolving and highly important topic of interoperability in healthcare, how healthcare IT organizations are impacted, and ultimately why some upcoming changes in this space are so important.
The 21st Century Cures Act, which was enacted in 2016, requires healthcare IT organizations to ensure that developers enable the secure, authorized, and seamless exchange of electronic healthcare information between healthcare information technologies, also known as HIT.
Additionally, the user of these technologies should be able to access this data securely without barriers. The seamless exchange will make sure that data becomes more accessible to both patients and providers, but also these efficiencies will give patients more opportunities - some choice - so that they feel more in control and confident about their quality of life.
The majority of the healthcare industry uses electronic health record systems. Yet the ability to send, receive, find, and even integrate patient information among the EHRs remains a challenge, even in 2022.
To help us better understand why this is still the case, I sat down with Jon Elwell. Jon is the CEO of Kno2, a leader and innovator in the space of inoperability. Kno2’s mission is to solve interoperability for the healthcare industry and truly transform how patient information is exchanged.
Not only am I impressed by the people who work in the future-focused vision of Kno2, but I also value their joint commitment to transforming healthcare through connected experiences, including zPaper.
During our conversation, we grapple with the following topics:
- Obstacles that are stopping providers from achieving interoperability
- Advantages interoperability provides to patients and providers
- The support that interoperability provides to ACO’s and their overall mission to reduce duplicate services and prevent medical errors
- The role interoperability can play in removing slow, manual and inefficient processes that prevent coordinated care between providers
- The impact providers are feeling due to interoperability requirements by 2024
